About us

Owners appoint us for the commercial half of the vessel.

Meridian Compass is a commercial ship management company. We fix the vessel, run the voyage, calculate the laytime and chase the freight until it is in the owner’s account. Technical management stays where it belongs — with the technical manager.

Most of the money on a tanker voyage is won or lost after the recap is agreed: in the notice of readiness, in the hours that do and do not count, in the demurrage claim that is presented on time with the documents behind it.

We work for owners only, so there is no question whose side the calculation is argued from. Commissions are disclosed in full, every voyage is reported in writing, and you talk to the person who actually fixed the ship.

Services

What the commercial desk actually does.

Five functions, handled end to end by one team, so nothing is dropped between the fixture and the final account.

01

Chartering & fixtures

We put the vessel in front of the right charterers and argue the terms that decide the voyage result, not just the rate.

  • Spot and time charter negotiation
  • Charter party terms reviewed clause by clause
  • Laycan, demurrage rate and exceptions pinned down
  • Recap circulated the same day

Result: a fixture you can actually perform, on terms that hold up when the voyage goes wrong.

02

Voyage operations

From port nomination to hoses off, the voyage is run against the charter party rather than improvised as it goes.

  • Port and agent appointment
  • Voyage orders, instructions and routing
  • Daily position and operations reporting
  • Notice of readiness tendered and protected

Result: fewer disputes at the end, because the record was kept from the start.

03

Laytime & demurrage

Laytime is calculated line by line from the statement of facts, and the claim is presented inside the time bar with the documents attached.

  • Statement of facts checked against the charter party
  • Turn time, excepted periods and stoppages applied correctly
  • Claims prepared, presented and followed up
  • Counterclaims answered with evidence

Result: demurrage that is recovered, not written off because a deadline passed.

04

Freight & post-fixture accounts

The voyage is not finished when the cargo is discharged. It is finished when the account is settled and agreed.

  • Freight invoicing and collection
  • Disbursement accounts reviewed and challenged
  • Voyage result against budget
  • Commissions disclosed in full

Result: you know what the voyage earned, and why, in one statement.

05

Bunkers

Fuel is the largest variable cost on the voyage, so it is bought deliberately rather than at the last port with a berth free.

  • Stem planning against the voyage
  • Supplier selection and price negotiation
  • Quantity and quality disputes pursued
  • Consumption checked against the charter party

Result: a lower fuel bill, and a case to make when the delivered quantity is short.

Why owners appoint us

A small desk that answers for its own numbers.

01

Owners only

We do not act for charterers. There is no second interest on the other side of the laytime calculation we are presenting on your behalf.

02

Crude oil tankers

One trade, learned properly. Tanker laytime runs in running hours, not weather working days, and the terms that matter are not the ones a dry cargo desk watches.

03

You speak to the person who fixed the ship

No account manager between you and the desk. The same people negotiate the charter party, run the voyage and defend the claim.

04

Commissions disclosed in full

Every address and brokerage commission on the fixture is shown on the voyage account. You see the gross and the net, not a single figure.

05

Claims presented on time

Demurrage is lost to time bars more often than to argument. Claims go out inside the window with the supporting documents already attached.

06

Written reporting, every voyage

Position and operations while the voyage runs, then one closing statement showing what the voyage earned against what it was expected to earn.

How it works

Five stages, from first conversation to settled account.

Stage 1

Review

We look at the vessel, her trading pattern and what the last few voyages actually returned.

Stage 2

Mandate

Scope, reporting and commission structure agreed in writing before anything is fixed.

Stage 3

Fixture

We market the vessel, negotiate the terms and circulate the recap with our comments on it.

Stage 4

Voyage

Operations, notices, port calls and daily reporting, with the record kept as the voyage runs.

Stage 5

Account

Freight collected, laytime calculated, claims presented, and one closing statement issued.

Frequently asked

Questions owners ask before they appoint us.

No. We are a commercial desk and we stay on the commercial side — chartering, operations, laytime, freight and bunkers. Your technical manager keeps the vessel trading; we work alongside them, and we are used to that split.
Yes. A single tanker is a full commercial workload if it is run properly, and it is the arrangement where the difference between an attentive desk and a passive one shows up fastest in the voyage result.
A management fee agreed in the mandate, plus the commission structure set out there. Every address and brokerage commission on a fixture appears on the voyage account, so the gross and the net are both visible to you.
We answer it line by line from the statement of facts and the charter party, with the supporting documents attached. Most disputes are settled at that stage. Where they are not, we prepare the file for the owner’s lawyers rather than hand over a folder of loose emails.
Crude oil tankers. The desk is in Dubai, which puts one working day alongside the Far East through the morning and Europe through the afternoon.
Once the mandate is signed we can market the vessel immediately. If she is already fixed, we take over the post-fixture work — operations, laytime and the account — from whatever point the voyage has reached.

Contact

Tell us about the vessel.

Send the particulars and where she is trading. You will get a considered reply from the desk that would actually handle her — not a brochure.

  • A view on what she should be earning in the current market
  • Where we think the last voyages lost money, if you share them
  • A clear scope and fee proposal, in writing
  • No obligation and nothing circulated to the market

Enquiry

Thank you — your enquiry has been noted. The desk will come back to you directly.

We reply from the desk, usually within one working day. Nothing you send is circulated to the market.
